Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

At Bayside Dental we provide two different types of crown:
*Conventional two visit crowns which are made by a dental laboratory

*One visit crowns – a New Zealand invention which has been in the market for about three years and has proven very successful

Reasons for crowns:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.
  • Tooth has a root canal filling.

Two visit lab-made crowns:

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth coloured crown) are the most popular. They are highly durable and will last many years. Porcelain crowns are made to either match or to improve the shape, size, and colour or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Procedure:

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, the dentist will then take accurate molds of your teeth. Your temporary crown will then be placed with temporary cement. The molds are then sent to laboratory for them to fabricate your desired crown.

At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.

Types of two visit crowns:

Old style porcelain fused to metal crowns are more creamy in colour and show the metal margin.

New all porcelain crowns which are completely natural looking don’t have any metal showing. Both of these crowns require two appointments as they are made in a lab.
